AIM:
- To reduce weight
- To improve the quality of life
- To prevent complications
WATER DRINKING:
MECHANISMS:
* Drinking half a litre of water
↓
Increases activity of the sympathetic nervous system
↓
& it was shown to increase energy expenditure
↓
appear to be mediated through the activation of the sympathetic nervous system
↓
might stimulate thermogenesis and increase resting energy expenditure by 30%
↓
within 10 min of drinking the water (peaked at 30-40 min) and was sustained for over an hour.
Sympathetic activation may be due to following reasons:
- Water temperature
- Distension of gastrointestinal organs
- Changes in osmolarity
*consuming water before a meal or with a meal reduces sensations of hunger, and increases satiety.
* Increased water intake
↓
Associated with loss of body weight
↓
via two mechanisms
↓
decreased feeding and increased lipolysis
* Increased water intake
↓
leads to an increase in blood volume
↓
with an attendant increase in right atrium pressure
↓
This would release atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP),
↓
activates uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1)
↓
that increases fat metabolism and
↓
leads to a loss of body weight
